Barium Enema
Description -A barium enema, also known as a lower GI (gastrointestinal) exam, is a test that uses x-ray examination to view the large intestine. There are two types of this test: the single contrast technique where barium sulfate is introduced into the rectum in order to gain a profile view of the large intestine; and the double contrast (or “air contrast”) technique where air is introduced into the rectum along with a small amount of thin barium to display a detailed image of the mucosal pattern or outline of the colon.
Indication-A barium enema may be performed for a variety of reasons including diarrhea, constipation, lower abdominal pain, bloody stools and unexplained weight loss. The test also aides in the timely diagnosis of colon and rectal diseases such as colorectal cancers and inflammatory disease. The detection of polyps (a benign growth in the tissue lining of the colon and rectum), diverticula (“pouching” out of the colon wall), motility disorders and structural changes in the large intestine can also be demonstrated by this testing method.
Procedure -The barium enema procedure begins with the patient instructed to lie down on a radiographic table with tilting capabilities to have an x-ray of the abdomen (a scout film) taken. The patient is then placed on their side and a lubricated rectal tube is inserted into the anus. This allows the radiologist or an assistant to administer the barium into the intestine while the process is being closely monitored using fluoroscopy (an x-ray unit combined with a TV monitor). X-rays are taken as the colon is filled with the barium. Additional x-rays are taken when the filling process is completed. The patient is placed in various positions throughout the exam so that structures may be optimally demonstrated. The abdomen may be imaged again after the barium has been evacuated by the patient. Approximate time for examination: 30 to 45 minutes.
